GrowWithFlow conference (recap 7): E-Learning Experiences

Last November, over 80 technical communicators, information architects, and documentation aficionados broadened their horizon at GrowWithFlow, Flow’s highly irregular but equally appreciated technical communication conference. Here is one of the highlights: shining a light on e-learning for technical topics.

There are many reasons why you might set up an e-learning: whether you want to boost the knowledge of your employees—new or already experienced—or train external users to use your product effectively, it’s an efficient way to keep your learners engaged while they absorb new information.

Is there an e-learning for e-learnings?

When you decide to incorporate e-learning into your training package, you will likely ask yourself some questions: where should I begin? What steps should I take? Which tools do I need? Do I have the right resources?

Crafting an effective e-learning experience can feel daunting when you’re unsure where to start. This is especially the case when the material is technical, but important for safety reasons. It is a challenge many companies face, which is why we tackled it during our GrowWithFlow event.

The learning journey

Ultimately, every e-learning starts with a specific goal: what do you want your audience to learn? Break down the wealth of knowledge to its basics and ask yourself what concrete skills you want learners to develop.

Then, craft the path to that goal. One trick is to think of it like a movie—every great film starts with a storyboard that builds the journey a learner embarks on. From there, the scenes come to life. By incorporating text, graphics, and interactive elements, your story takes shape. These visuals help engage the learner and maintain their attention through the course.

As a last step, you include quizzes to help solidify the learning and ensure long-term retention. And just like that, your story, along with your vision, takes flight. Then it’s just a matter of choosing a platform on which you want to publish the e-learning.
